Meowkai is my pick for the best Maokai skin, but the deciding question is whether you want him to stay frightening. A wooden grin peering out of a plush cat hood wins on character. Haunted is the alternative for anyone who wants the forest monster without the costume party.
The ranking covers all eleven standalone skins. The reviews are grouped by taste, since comparing two hostile trees is more useful than asking a holiday costume to do the same job as a space suit. Maokai’s huge arm and little companions matter as much as his face. Charred places unusually high because it transforms the wood itself, without needing an elaborate outfit.

The full Maokai skin ranking
The official champion page also lists these eleven skins. The default appearance and twenty-four chroma records are excluded. Older does not necessarily mean untouched: Riot’s 2014 champion update revised Maokai and his existing skins, so their original release dates do not tell you the whole story.
When you want a different kind of creature
1. Meowkai

The cat costume works because Maokai has not disappeared inside it. That is still a wooden face under the hood, and the grin makes him look thoroughly pleased with his enormous padded paws. Replacing him with an ordinary cute cat would have lost half the joke.
His oversized arm gets a cat face of its own, while the little creatures repeat its purple plush shapes. That is what lifts Meowkai above an ordinary costume: the adult, its biggest limb and its smaller companions all contribute to the joke.
Riot Galetta’s March 2016 PBE announcement, preserved by Surrender at 20, listed new particles, recall and sounds for Q, W, E and recall at an intended 1,350 RP. The current files also assign Meowkai-specific Nature’s Grasp visuals. Dedicated attack, emote, run and recall clips in its animation graph make this a broader makeover than a new suit over the base movements.
The trade-off is Maokai’s menace. I enjoy seeing that face in plush clothing; if you find it irritating rather than funny, Haunted should move straight to the top of your list.
3. Astronaut Maokai

Astronaut puts the big body to work as a home for small aliens. They perch on the huge white-and-navy suit, sit along its arm and gather around a growing shoot. Maokai still looks like a guardian of living things, even with manufactured joints and copper-colored fittings where the bark used to be.
I miss the face. A dark visor takes its place, so the aliens have to supply much of the expression. Meowkai lets the wooden grin interrupt the costume; Astronaut closes the helmet over it. Choose the space suit if you care more about that busy little ecosystem than Maokai’s own expression.
The June 2021 Riot PBE post announced new models, VFX, SFX and recall at 1,350 RP. Its current animation assignments include an Astronaut run and recall, with much of the remaining set borrowed from Worldbreaker.
One limit matters if the friendly art is your main attraction: Riot declined to change the taunt in the final PBE response. It also said the saplings matched previous skins in size, despite their bright color making them appear larger. The friendly suit does not include a rewritten taunt or enlarged saplings.
5. Corrupted Petricite Maokai

Corrupted Petricite puts pale, rigid surfaces around dark limbs that refuse to grow straight. Gold bands hold the shell together; the arm curls out into a more feral face than the crested head above it. The small creatures repeat the hard exterior and purple light.
Those limbs interest me more than the ornate torso. The armor can make Maokai look like a giant with a tree attached, whereas Charred makes every branch part of the same disaster. Move Petricite higher if you prefer a hard shell over exposed wood. Its client description places it in an old petricite grove animated by wild magic; the purple coloring does not make it a Void skin.
The current skin files assign a skin-specific SFX bank, sapling material and themed spell particles. It has its own dance and recall in the animation graph, while most other clips come from Worldbreaker.
Corrupted Petricite arrived as a pass reward. Riot’s 26.5 notes put it at level 9 of the Season 1 Act 2 battle pass and date the release to March 4, 2026. Check the current client offer; that completed pass is not a present-day acquisition route.
6. Worldbreaker Maokai

Worldbreaker’s head and oversized arm look carved for the same monument. Heavy gold edges and teal bars frame both faces, with blue-purple roots spreading beneath the hard surfaces. The repeated geometry makes the armor belong to the creature instead of looking bolted onto a tree.
The mask also hides the gnarly expression I like in Maokai. Astronaut has its aliens to compensate for the closed helmet; Worldbreaker asks sheer size and ornament to do the work. It is a convincing golem, but I prefer the exposed, damaged wood of Haunted and Charred.
Riot Orphyre’s March 2020 PBE post announced new models, effects, sounds and recall at 1,350 RP. The current animation set includes dedicated combat, movement, emote and recall clips. Choose Worldbreaker over Charred if you want the new combat and emote animations as well as an armored golem. Charred wins on the burning wood for me, not on the size of its feature list.
Keep the tree hostile
2. Haunted Maokai

Haunted’s pale, split face is more frightening to me than any of the armored giants. It looks dead until the yellow eyes and cyan mouth give it away. There is no helmet to distract from that expression, and the graveyard setting only needs to suggest what might be buried nearby.
Then there is the sapling, with too many teeth for such a small mouth. It repeats the adult’s hunger without needing the same proportions. The pair belongs in one unpleasant forest, which is exactly what I want from this version of Maokai.
The current Haunted animation graph assigns its own run, attacks, spell and emote clips. Its skin definition also includes themed spell particles and a small additional SFX bank with death and respawn events alongside base audio. There is more here than a pale recolor, but it is not an all-new voice performance.
Choose Haunted if Maokai should remain threatening. Meowkai takes first because of what it does with the arm, face and little companions together. For horror, Haunted has the stronger expression and no comic detour.
4. Charred Maokai

Charred needs no outfit. Blackened bark splits around orange heat, the mouth becomes a furnace, and the smaller creatures have matching angry faces. Every branch belongs to the same idea. I would take that coherent body over several of the more elaborate armor sets.
Its current definition retains base animation and audio, but assigns skin-specific visuals across attacks, Q, W, E and the current ultimate. You are not getting a new movement or sound package; you are getting more than new bark textures.
Haunted wins the close comparison because its face holds your attention. Charred’s expression becomes part of the surrounding blaze. If the burning-treant idea is the attraction, though, the simpler animation and audio treatment is an easy compromise to make.
10. Totemic Maokai

Totemic is worth a look for the mouth in its arm. The huge teeth repeat the central face in a rougher carving, while green and orange paint separates the features from plain bark. I find those two faces less convincing together than Haunted and its hungry sapling, but the arm gives Totemic a reason to exist beyond a color change.
The current files retain base animations and audio, with selected skin-specific sapling, ultimate and other visual assignments. The carving is the draw, not a new recall or audio treatment.
A team, a holiday, or a favorite costume
7. DRX Maokai

DRX stretches an angular, dragonlike head over a vast silver-armored body. Blue light cuts through the plates, and Maokai gives the shared team illustration much of its scale. I prefer that transformation to Goalkeeper’s shirt, although it leaves less of the tree exposed than I would like.
This is Juhan’s tribute: the current client bio credits his Maokai performance at the 2022 World Championship. Riot’s May 2023 PBE post introduces the alpaca companion and lists custom model, VFX, SFX and recall at 1,350 RP.
The current animation graph gives DRX a dedicated recall, with much of the remaining movement drawn from Worldbreaker. Pick it for Juhan, the alpaca or the plated creature, rather than expecting a completely different animation set.
8. Festive Maokai

Festive has the advantage of starting with an actual tree. Dense fir branches soften Maokai’s outline, a striped scarf wraps the body, and a grinning present in his hand takes the place of a more menacing companion. Even the huge arm gets a Santa hat. It is a more affectionate joke than Meowkai, though the grinning present still looks capable of trouble.
Its current definition retains base animation and audio alongside skin-specific sapling, W and ultimate visuals. The recall and voice remain the base versions. The fir-tree outfit is the reason to want it, especially if Goalkeeper’s shirt feels too slight a change.
9. Victorious Maokai

Victorious leaves pale wood showing beneath blue drapery and gold ornaments. It dresses Maokai up without replacing the whole body with metal. Giving the sapling a matching small outfit makes the pair feel properly prepared for the same ceremony.
Riot Time Wizard’s 2016 PBE description lists the royal-blue toga, silvery-birch treatment, new particles and a recall with sounds. The current files retain a dedicated recall, its associated sound effect and themed ability visuals. Most other animations remain the base set.
Eligible players earned it by finishing the 2016 season at Gold or higher. The archived Riot reward announcement explicitly used end-of-season rank, not a temporary peak. Today’s ranked progress cannot recreate that qualification. If you own it, the exposed wood and dressed-up sapling make it a good choice when you want a ceremonial treant rather than a monster.
11. Goalkeeper Maokai

The goalposts growing out of Goalkeeper’s back are a much better joke than the jersey. His grassy crown and beard belong on the field, too. The shirt leaves most of Maokai recognizable, which is charming if you want a tree playing soccer and underwhelming if you want a different creature.
The current skin files retain base animation/audio and assign selected sapling and ultimate visuals. Riot Paradox’s June 2014 launch announcement priced the football skins at 750 RP and promised year-round availability. That promise belongs to 2014: current client metadata marks Goalkeeper legacy. Check the actual offer instead of treating the old announcement as shop advice.
Choose it when soccer is the point. Goalkeeper does not need to outdo Haunted as a monster to be the right skin for a tree in goal.
