Volibear’s 10 Best Skins: Inkshadow Takes First

Inkshadow's tiger design takes first, with The Thousand-Pierced Bear close behind. Compare all ten skins, including the hot-spring retreat and both Dragon variants.

    Riot Games

Riot once considered making Volibear a many-eyed horror creature, decided that was too far from the champion his players knew, and made the idea into a skin instead. The Thousand-Pierced Bear is a good argument for keeping the rejected sketch. Its antlers, strange eyes, and monstrous claws do more to change Volibear than another suit of armor could. Riot’s account of the redesign explains how it happened.

Inkshadow is still our pick for the best Volibear skin. The tiger-like face, dark mane, and ink-brush styling make an equally substantial reinvention with less dependence on horror. It also has a documented package of custom effects, sounds, and recall. Thousand-Pierced takes second for players who want the bear to look genuinely unnatural; Duality Dragon places third for a more regal interpretation of his power.

This is a design ranking, not a popularity poll. It includes all ten non-default standalone skins in Riot’s 16.17.1 catalog, checked September 5, 2026. Prestige Duality Dragon is a separate skin; the parent-linked chromas are not extra entries. Prices cited below are historical announcements, with the date attached, rather than current client quotes.

    1. Inkshadow Volibear

Inkshadow Volibear with a tiger-like face, black mane and orange armor striking through sweeping black brush strokes
Inkshadow replaces the pale bear’s face with feline features and a dark mane, surrounded by ink-like strokes. Artwork: Riot Games.

Inkshadow changes the animal before it decorates the outfit. The broad feline face and dark mane have a different attitude from Volibear’s familiar polar-bear shape, while the orange-and-black treatment gives him a warmer, harsher look. The shoulder ornaments are substantial, but they do not bury the creature beneath a complete metal suit.

Both Inkshadow and Duality Dragon give Volibear an elaborate martial-fantasy costume, but Inkshadow goes further from his usual white fur and blue electricity. If you want the champion to look different without making him a comedy character, this is where we would start.

Riot introduced Inkshadow at an announced 1,350 RP in its April 2023 PBE post. The feature list included a custom recall alongside the model, textures, and themed visual and sound effects. There is a full cosmetic package to weigh against the other contenders, rather than just a feline face in an illustration.

The mane is the part that could put you off. It is dark, heavy, and deliberately stylized; anyone hoping for a natural-looking tiger will find a lot of fantasy warrior attached to it. We prefer that exaggeration to the more familiar armored-bear designs, but Thousand-Pierced is the better alternative if you want a stranger creature instead of a more decorated fighter.

    2. The Thousand-Pierced Bear

The Thousand-Pierced Bear with branching antlers, multiple glowing eyes and huge purple-edged claws towering over hooded figures
Branching antlers and extra eyes turn Volibear into an unnatural creature looming above its followers. Artwork: Riot Games.

Thousand-Pierced is the least comfortable skin in the list, which is exactly its appeal. The narrow, skull-like face and branching antlers disrupt the recognizable bear head. The eyes are worse: they make the creature seem as though it is watching from places that should not be able to watch you.

It is also unusually well matched to Volibear’s physical behavior. A creature built around huge claws and an unsettling mouth makes sense on a champion who runs down a target and bites it. There is no need to imagine why a modern occupation or a holiday costume still fights like a bear.

Riot’s May 2020 development notes moved this skin away from the base version’s blue effects during the rework. Lutzburg’s preserved change list records that work alongside the model updates. The horror direction received its own visual treatment instead of leaving all the transformation to the mask and antlers.

Inkshadow wins overall because it provides a substantial redesign without the extra eyes and antlers becoming the entire decision. For a horror fan, that is an argument in Thousand-Pierced’s favor. It should be your first preview, not an afterthought because it was once given away.

    3. Duality Dragon Volibear

Duality Dragon Volibear in gold armor with braided white fur and a dark arm surrounded by blue energy beneath a dragon
Braided fur, gold fittings and blue energy give Duality Dragon a ceremonial warrior appearance. Artwork: Riot Games.

Duality Dragon makes Volibear look like a guardian worth carving onto a temple wall. The face armor and braids are more formal than his default design, and the dark arm breaks up what could otherwise be too much pale fur and gold. It is handsome without turning into an entirely different animal.

The sound treatment is a concrete reason to compare it with Inkshadow. Riot’s October 2021 feedback response added dragon breathing during Stormbringer, a roar on the jump, and a growl as it ended. The same update adjusted passive-hit sounds and added subtle purple tones across the effects. The full ultimate sequence is worth listening to when comparing the two skins, rather than judging only their first impact sounds.

Riot announced a new model, effects, sounds, and recall at 1,350 RP in that 2021 post. Its accompanying explanation matters, too: the theme depicts power received from dragons, rather than requiring every detail to look like a dragon’s body. If you want Volibear to retain some of his own identity, that restraint is a benefit.

Third place comes down to familiarity. White fur and cool magical light remain close to the base champion’s territory. Inkshadow and Thousand-Pierced make larger visual departures. Duality Dragon is our choice when you want to keep the bear and dress him as a mythological warrior.

InkshadowFeline face and ink stylingA heavy, stylized mane
Thousand-PiercedAntlered horror creatureExtra eyes dominate the design
Duality DragonRegal armor and dragon audioA familiar cool-colored bear

Those are the strongest serious transformations. The next skin answers a different request: let the enormous storm god have a day off.

    4. Spirit Blossom Springs Volibear

Spirit Blossom Springs Volibear reclining in a hot spring with a folded towel on his head, a teal scarf and green swirls around his forearms
A towel, thick scarf and relaxed soak replace the usual battle scene with a hot-spring break. Artwork: Riot Games.

Spirit Blossom Springs has the best change of mood in Volibear’s wardrobe. The brown fur, large scarf, and towel on his head make him look like an enormous guest who has found his favorite bath. The green curls around his arms keep enough magic in the design that he still belongs among spirits rather than ordinary vacationers.

Riot’s July 2025 PBE post listed custom models, visual and sound effects, and recall at an announced 1,350 RP. The themed spell and recall package gives you more to compare than the towel in the splash. Its relaxed premise is what puts it above the Prestige Dragon variant for us.

The objection is the same thing that makes it funny: this is a relaxed character on a very aggressive champion. If you want Volibear’s appearance to match the act of charging into someone, the serious top three do that more naturally. If you enjoy the mismatch, Spirit Blossom Springs belongs above them on your own list.

    5. Prestige Duality Dragon Volibear

Prestige Duality Dragon Volibear in bright gold armor with white braided fur and red-orange energy around one arm
Prestige keeps the Dragon design’s basic composition but pushes the armor and energy toward gold and red. Artwork: Riot Games.

Prestige is the louder Dragon variant. The gold armor, warmer energy, and bright shoulder ornaments make the same basic idea look more triumphant and less solemn. It is a distinct model-and-effects option, although the two illustrations deliberately share a composition.

The important comparison is what it shares with the regular skin. Riot’s separate Prestige post explicitly carried over the passive-hit and dragon-themed ultimate sound changes. Do not choose Prestige solely to get those sounds; the regular Duality Dragon received them as well. The Prestige thread documents its own model and visual effects, not a completely separate voice performance.

We prefer the regular version’s cooler look and place this below Spirit Blossom Springs because the latter adds a more distinct mood to a collection. Prefer gold and red? Then Prestige can reasonably move ahead of the regular skin for you. Just compare the exact versions before spending: Riot’s March 2024 patch notes record a past Mythic Shop return, not proof that it is currently on offer. The catalog contains one Prestige Duality Dragon, not an additional Prestige 2022 edition.

    6. Captain Volibear

Captain Volibear adjusting his sunglasses on the left beside Constable Trundle, both in police uniforms in front of an explosion
Volibear and Trundle share an exaggerated action-cop scene, complete with sunglasses and an explosion. Artwork: Riot Games.

Captain has a better joke than simply putting a hat on a bear. The sunglasses, mustache, tie, and oversized gloves make Volibear look like the gruff officer in an action movie. Trundle standing beside him with an absurdly large baton finishes the scene.

One useful detail survives beyond the loading screen: Riot Lutzburg’s May 2020 rework notes changed Captain’s basic-attack animations from swipes to punches. That choice fits the uniformed bruiser and gives the enormous gloves a purpose.

Captain ranks above El Rayo because the whole civilian role is so easy to recognize. The wrestling costume below also suits a brawler, but its mask and mane do not sell a character quite as specific as the bear with a badge. Spirit Blossom Springs is our preferred lighthearted choice if you want a newer themed-effects package; Captain is the better comedy premise if the bath scene feels too relaxed.

    7. Northern Storm Volibear

Northern Storm Volibear wearing a mechanical jaw mask, white camouflage and heavy electrical equipment in a snowy industrial setting
A jaw mask and electrical hardware turn Northern Storm into a military technology design. Artwork: Riot Games.

Northern Storm deserves a closer look than its name suggests. It is not just Volibear in colder weather. The tactical mask, camouflaged clothing, and equipment around his arms and back make his electricity look like part of a specialized combat outfit.

Riot’s 2020 concept breakdown explains the details: antennas replaced the back spikes, the clothing had to work while he ran on all fours, and the team checked that his breathing mask could open with his jaw. That last point is particularly good costume design for a champion who needs to bite things.

It loses some of the bear’s personality behind the hardware. Choose it if you like the mechanical explanation for his power; skip it if an expressive creature face is the reason you play a monster champion. Inkshadow changes that face, while Northern Storm mostly covers it.

    8. Runeguard Volibear

Runeguard Volibear roaring in heavy blue-edged armor and a white fur collar with lightning around his gauntlets
Broad armor plates and massive gauntlets give Runeguard a heavily equipped silhouette. Artwork: Riot Games.

Runeguard is the bluntest armored-warrior option. The enormous gauntlets and broad chest plates give Volibear a sturdy, blocky outline, with the pale fur around his shoulders preventing it from becoming a completely enclosed suit. If you want a bear in substantial armor, it delivers that more directly than the ceremonial Duality Dragon.

During the 2020 update, Riot enlarged its back spikes; the change appears in Lutzburg’s preserved visual notes. The design’s size is intentional. For us, however, the gear crowds out the creature beneath it. Its place in a collection is as a heavily armored alternative, not the first choice for someone seeking a new animal identity or a distinct comic role.

    9. El Rayo Volibear

El Rayo Volibear in a purple lightning mask and a yellow mane leaping into a wrestling ring beside Gnar and Mundo
Volibear enters the shared wrestling scene from the right, with a bright mask and an exaggerated yellow mane. Artwork: Riot Games.

The purple mask and yellow mane do not try to be tasteful. El Rayo needs to look like a wrestler visible from the back of an arena, and it succeeds at that. The lightning motif also has an obvious home on Volibear without requiring an invented new power source.

Our reservation is that the costume is more distinctive than the character it creates. Captain’s sunglasses and uniform immediately suggest an action-cop personality; El Rayo is mostly a loud outfit for a creature that was already a brawler. Pick it if the wrestling fantasy is the attraction, especially if you enjoy the shared scene with Gnar and Mundo. For a broader comedic reinvention, Captain or Spirit Blossom Springs would be our choice.

    10. Thunder Lord Volibear

Thunder Lord Volibear with dark fur, long braids and blue-lit armor roaring above a village amid lightning
Thunder Lord keeps the storm-god identity and gives it darker fur and imposing armor. Artwork: Riot Games.

Thunder Lord is easy to like and harder to recommend over the rest. Dark fur, heavy armor, and blue lightning are a convincing look for Volibear, but they do little to change the central idea of a gigantic bear god arriving in a storm. Even the braids keep him close to his familiar silhouette.

That restraint may be exactly what an owner wants. It is less grotesque than Thousand-Pierced and less decorative than either Dragon variant. In a complete ranking, though, we would rather spend the higher places on skins with a sharper individual idea. Thunder Lord is the conservative choice: keep Volibear looking like Volibear, only darker and more armored.

Was The Thousand-Pierced Bear permanently free?

No. Riot’s May 2020 giveaway announcement covered players who already owned Volibear before patch 10.11 and those who bought him during that patch. Distribution ran from May 28 through June 10, 2020, with a login required. Owning Volibear now does not recreate that eligibility.

Riot also said the skin would become regularly purchasable for 975 RP after the giveaway. That is its announced historical purchase route and price, not a fresh check of your regional client. It was not described as a reward that would remain exclusive to the original recipients.

An old headline promising a free skin can therefore be misleading without its dates. Check the present offer for The Thousand-Pierced Bear itself before buying currency. Its appeal is still the antlered monster; missing a six-year-old promotion does not make Inkshadow the only design worth considering.
