Best Karthus Skins: All 10 Ranked, Including Arcana

Elderwood is our favorite Karthus skin, with Lightsbane close behind. The two Pentakill costumes deserve their own comparison, and Arcana gives the roster a sharper red-and-gold alternative.

    Riot Games

Karthus’ 2014 visual update happened to line up with Pentakill’s first album. Riot composer Praeco explained that the champion team used the music as inspiration for his band skin. The original costume grew with the band, years before Pentakill III gave its singer another wardrobe. Riot’s Q&A is preserved here.

Elderwood Karthus is our best overall skin, though. The warped wood, exposed glowing ribs, and dark forest theme give the Deathsinger a convincing new body without making him less sinister. Karthus Lightsbane is a close second for its spellbook-centered sorcerer design, followed by Arcana’s more formal red-and-gold magic.

Pentakill fans should compare the two band costumes before buying either. Lost Chapter gets our higher placement, but its polished frontman looks different enough from the original’s skeletal singer that newer does not automatically mean better for your collection.

    The complete Karthus skin ranking

Riot’s Data Dragon 16.17.1 roster, checked September 5, 2026, contains 10 standalone Karthus skins. That includes Arcana, released in September 2025. The default skin and 33 parent-linked chroma records are not ranked as additional costumes.

We favor a clear character idea, interesting costume choices, and documented effects or animation work that supports the theme. Rank reflects editorial taste. Splash descriptions are based on the pictured art; gameplay cosmetic details come from the linked Riot posts, not assumptions about what an illustration proves.

Ranked skinReason to choose itReason to pass
    1. Elderwood KarthusA twisted forest creature with themed effects and recallMore bark and foliage than traditional robed necromancer
    2. Karthus LightsbaneA human-looking dark sorcerer whose tome drives the themeLoses the skeletal face that some players want
    3. Arcana KarthusRed gems, gold geometry, and a severe masked faceFormal and ornate rather than decayed or monstrous
    4. Pentakill III: Lost Chapter KarthusAn elaborate frontman costume with its own effects packageToo polished if you prefer the band’s rougher original look
    5. Pentakill KarthusA skeletal metal singer with a strong connection to early PentakillThe newer costume is a more ambitious wardrobe change
    6. Infernal KarthusA burning mage with a coherent elemental themeFire replaces much of Karthus’ ghostly personality
    7. Grim Reaper KarthusThe hood, skull, and scythe are an excellent fitA familiar version of death rather than a new character
    8. Fnatic KarthusAn esports tribute with a headset and team colorsTeam attachment matters more than costume spectacle
    9. Statue of KarthusAn absurdly appropriate torch-and-crown substitutionThe monument joke has to be the attraction
    10. Phantom KarthusDark robes, a concealed face, and old-fashioned menaceThe least distinct reason to replace default Karthus

    1. Elderwood Karthus: death in the forest

Elderwood Karthus with a horned wooden head, glowing purple eyes, pale luminous ribs, brown leaves, and a crystal-bearing branch staff
Bark and dead leaves replace the familiar robes without making Karthus look any healthier. Artwork: Riot Games.

Elderwood turns Karthus into something barely human. The face sits inside a jagged wooden crown, pale light escapes between his ribs, and autumn leaves gather around a body that resembles twisted roots. You can still make out a head and torso, which makes the unfamiliar material more unsettling.

The feature scope supports that change of setting. Riot’s June 2023 development post lists a rebuilt model and textures, custom spell visuals and sounds, and a recall. The team announced 1,350 RP in that 2023 PBE post; this is a dated reference, not a live price check. Read the original Elderwood thread.

We put it ahead of Lightsbane because the body itself carries the idea. Remove the staff and Elderwood still looks like a corrupted forest creature. Lightsbane depends more on the book, armor, and sorcery around an otherwise human figure. That makes Elderwood our first recommendation for someone who likes Karthus as an inhuman presence.

The leaves and branching shapes do move him away from the severe religious costume of default Karthus. Grim Reaper is a better fit if you want the familiar hooded figure, and Arcana keeps a tidier arrangement of robes and ornament. We prefer Elderwood’s transformation, but someone who likes the traditional necromancer has good reasons to choose differently.

    2. Karthus Lightsbane: the dangerous party member

Karthus Lightsbane with long white hair, a human-looking face, dark gold-trimmed armor, and an open book surrounded by purple magic
The forbidden tome is the center of Lightsbane’s sorcerer costume. Artwork: Riot Games.

Lightsbane looks like the member of an adventuring party who has been reading ahead in a book nobody should have opened. Long white hair frames a visible face, the armor has pointed gold borders, and purple magic spills around the tome. It is a particularly good option when you want a dark fantasy mage but find Elderwood too far removed from a human shape.

That reading is consistent with Riot’s concept. In the 2016 PBE introduction, Riot LoveStrut described Karthus betraying his party and taking the book they had been seeking. The feature list connects the new visual effects to the tome’s runes and describes sorcery flowing through his staff and hands during recall. It also lists new sounds, model work, and animation work. The Riot post survives in the 6.22 PBE archive.

Those details give the book a job beyond being a floating accessory. Karthus has become a forbidden-magic specialist, and the cosmetic changes follow that premise. We prefer this to a generic wizard makeover because the character’s bad intentions remain obvious.

Riot’s 2016 PBE price was 975 RP, lower than the 1,350 RP announced for Elderwood in 2023. That makes Lightsbane worth checking when you are comparing prices in the client, but the historical difference is not proof of today’s offer or stock.

The reason it falls short of first is the face. A handsome, long-haired sorcerer has less of the unpleasantness that makes Karthus memorable. If you want the creature under the robes to remain unmistakably dead, original Pentakill or Grim Reaper makes more sense.

    3. Arcana Karthus: sharp red-and-gold sorcery

Arcana Karthus with a long pale mask, red jewels, gold-edged robes, a floating red-lit book, and an orb staff against geometric lines
Arcana replaces organic decay with precise shapes and a severe, mask-like face. Artwork: Riot Games.

Arcana is the most composed of our leading picks. The pointed shoulders and long pale face keep the figure severe, while red gems and fine gold borders repeat across the costume. The book and staff look as though they belong to the same carefully designed set. Even the illustration’s framing has the precision of a decorated card.

Riot’s Arcana PBE announcement confirms custom model and texture work, visual effects, sounds, and recall. Patch 25.19 notes announced its September 24, 2025 release. It is the newest standalone skin in the current roster, but that alone does not put it at number one.

The appeal is how restrained the character remains beneath all the ornament. Arcana looks authoritative and remote. Elderwood looks corrupted; Lightsbane looks tempted by the book in his hands. We find those two character ideas more interesting than Arcana’s immaculate sorcerer, even while preferring Arcana’s red-and-gold palette to another purple design.

If your collection already has Elderwood or Lightsbane, Arcana gives you a more useful visual alternative than buying whichever purple costume you missed. It is the skin to consider when you want Karthus to look regal without putting a recognizable human face on him.

    4. Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Karthus

Pentakill III Lost Chapter Karthus in the center of the band splash with long white hair, a dark blue open coat, and gold rib-like chest ornaments
Karthus stands between Mordekaiser on the left and Sona on the right in this shared band illustration. Artwork: Riot Games.

Lost Chapter dresses Karthus for a larger production. The dark blue coat opens around gold ornaments shaped like ribs, long strips of fabric hang from his sleeves and waist, and his white hair frames a stern face. The bone motif remains, but the costume looks tailored rather than scavenged from a crypt.

Its August 2021 Riot development thread lists new model work, VFX, SFX, and recall. The final author update is more informative than that standard checklist: Riot DW Platypus recorded a revision to Requiem’s impact sound, plus a trimmed outer ground indicator on Lay Waste to bring it closer to the classic appearance.

Requiem is the detail worth paying attention to when comparing previews. A frontman’s climactic spell should appeal to you when it lands, not only while he is posing. Compare that impact with the sound of the original skin before deciding which version better suits your idea of a Pentakill performance.

We place Lost Chapter above the original for the more elaborate frontman design and its documented themed effects package. There is more separation from ordinary Karthus, particularly in the exposed face and stage clothing. The tradeoff is that he has become rather presentable. A metal singer can look glamorous, but the original makes a stronger case for looking dead.

If a particular song or lyric is your reason for buying, check for it in the preview. The band name alone cannot settle that purchase. A favorite album and a favorite skin are related tastes, but they need not lead you to the same choice.

    5. Pentakill Karthus

Original Pentakill Karthus as the skeletal long-haired singer in the center foreground, holding a microphone among the band's instruments
The original band’s singer keeps the skeletal face and dark, ragged costume. Artwork: Riot Games.

The original is less polished and more immediately grotesque. Karthus stands at the front with a skeletal face, long hair, and a microphone; the exposed ribs fit naturally among dark fabric and the band’s oversized instruments. Nothing about him suggests that the outfit would survive a wash.

This is where the 2014 development history helps explain the appeal. Praeco said the Karthus update team used Pentakill’s music as inspiration and aligned the update with the first album’s release. That was a redesign of an existing band skin, not the debut of the 2021 Lost Chapter costume. His comments appear in the June 2014 Riot Q&A.

Our preference between the two is close. Lost Chapter has the grander wardrobe; original Pentakill makes the singer’s relationship to death much less subtle. If your mental picture of the band is a group of monsters making an appalling amount of noise, start with the original.

There is little need to own both just to have a Pentakill option. Choose the face and costume you prefer, then compare a current gameplay preview. A purchase motivated by the band’s identity should not turn into an automatic vote for the newer release.

    6. Infernal Karthus

Infernal Karthus in the upper background with a tall flaming crown, dark armor, a burning book, and a staff behind Infernal Kennen
Karthus is the tall fire mage behind Kennen, not the small masked figure in the foreground. Artwork: Riot Games.

Infernal abandons the haunted-forest mood and the concert stage for a burning monarch. The face almost disappears inside the fire, the crown stretches upward, and the book looks dangerous to hold even before anyone reads it. There is a welcome bluntness to that design.

Riot’s June 2020 Infernal Karthus post confirms new spell visuals and sounds alongside the model, textures, and recall. The announced price was 1,350 RP at that time. That effects package makes Infernal worth comparing with the higher-ranked fantasy skins if the fire theme appeals to you.

The reason for sixth is personal: we prefer Karthus when his menace comes from being an uncanny death mage. Fire makes him easier to understand but less peculiar. For an Infernal collection, that is a benefit; the straightforward elemental identity is exactly what you want. For a first Karthus purchase, Elderwood and Lightsbane retain more of the oddness that distinguishes him.

Infernal also offers a warmer alternative to the purple leaders without Arcana’s decorative precision. Pick it when you would rather see a burning figure than a carefully arranged set of red jewels and gold trim.

    7. Grim Reaper Karthus

Grim Reaper Karthus in a ragged black hood holding a book and an enormous bone-shafted scythe in a candlelit graveyard
A hood, a skull, and a huge scythe need little explanation on the Deathsinger. Artwork: Riot Games.

Grim Reaper is almost too obvious a costume for Karthus, but the fit is hard to argue with. The large scythe gives the familiar robed figure a stronger outline, and the exposed skull removes any doubt about what is inside the hood. The candlelit graveyard illustration keeps the tone appropriately gloomy.

It is our favorite restrained costume in the lower half. You do not have to care about a band, an esports team, or an alternate universe to understand the attraction. Karthus has simply dressed for the job everyone already associates with him.

That also limits the transformation. Elderwood invents a new body; Grim Reaper supplies the expected uniform. Choose the latter if the conventional version of death is the version you like. More ornament would not necessarily improve this particular idea.

    8. Fnatic Karthus

Fnatic Karthus in the lower-right foreground of the team splash, wearing orange goggles and a headset beside a green-glowing team-branded book
Karthus is the gray-haired figure at the lower right, in Fnatic’s black and orange. Artwork: Riot Games.

The headset is the detail that makes this work. A death mage wearing team colors is one thing; a death mage who appears ready to join voice comms is much more entertaining. The orange goggles and Fnatic marks on his book tie the costume together without disguising the long-haired figure underneath.

The skin set commemorates Fnatic’s 2011 World Championship, even though Riot introduced these cosmetics in 2014. The preserved launch announcement explains that history. For Karthus specifically, Riot’s interview with xPeke about the Season 1 final recounts him playing the champion in the closing Baron fight.

Those connections are the buying reason. A Fnatic supporter or early-League collector may value them more than anything above this entry. Without that attachment, an orange headset is not enough to replace the fantasy of Elderwood or the character of Pentakill.

The old launch sale was time limited. Check the client for current availability rather than treating the surviving 2014 announcement as an open offer.

    9. Statue of Karthus

Statue of Karthus with a spiked liberty-style crown, green draped robes, a raised flaming torch, and a shadowed face
The crown and torch turn a familiar monument into an unexpectedly plausible Karthus costume. Artwork: Riot Games.

Statue works because the objects line up. Karthus already carries a staff and a book, and his long robes can become monumental drapery with little persuasion. A torch and a spiked crown make the reference immediately apparent.

There is something amusing about how serious the finished image remains. The face is a black void, the robes still belong to a threatening spellcaster, and the raised torch looks entirely at home. The joke does not require Karthus to start smiling.

We would choose it as a novelty alongside an established favorite. It has a clearer comic idea than Phantom, but less reason to become your only skin unless the monument reference is what brought you here.

    10. Phantom Karthus

Phantom Karthus in dark silver-trimmed robes with a concealed face, bright pink eyes, and a luminous orb at the top of his staff
Phantom keeps Karthus close to a conventional dark-robed spellcaster. Artwork: Riot Games.

Phantom preserves the austere version of Karthus: dark clothing, angular shoulders, a covered face, and a staff with an ominous light at its tip. The bright eyes provide enough personality to keep the figure from disappearing into the robes.

Its problem in this ranking is competition for the same mood. Grim Reaper has the scythe and skull; Arcana has the precise masked face and coordinated ornaments. Phantom keeps the mystery but offers a less distinctive identity to build a purchase around.

A reader who wants Karthus to stay a remote figure in dark robes may prefer this restraint. For us, that is too close to the champion’s starting point to make Phantom the first purchase.

Before paying, compare the parts you will hear repeatedly

Karthus gives you plenty of time with Lay Waste, Defile, and Requiem. Once two costumes interest you, compare their Q sound, the sustained E effect, and the end of the R cast in a current gameplay preview. Those repetitions can matter more to your enjoyment than an elaborate recall you see less often.

Keep that a preference check. The recorded Pentakill III Q-indicator revision describes an art adjustment, not a smaller hitbox or a promise that opponents will dodge differently. Likewise, a dramatic Requiem effect is not extra damage.

Then check the actual skin listing before adding RP. The 2016 Lightsbane, 2020 Infernal, and 2023 Elderwood prices quoted above are dated Riot announcements; sales and availability need a current client check. For a band-themed purchase, confirm that the selected item is the original Pentakill or Pentakill III: Lost Chapter you intended. They are separate skins, not two selectable outfits inside one purchase.
